Though currently Spain not features with a brand of cars of large size (leave aside the small manufacturers as Spania GTA) in the global automotive landscape, we were one of the major countries of the world in this sector. The two most successful brands of Spain by origin and history are the Hispano-Suiza and Seat. The first by be the unique brand of cars that was capable of planting face, match and even overcome to Rolls Royce by design, quality and exclusivity. The second being the only living exponent of what was our sector of the automobile in the 20TH century.
However, in the road came a company that calo very inside all those Spanish. In 1946 the extinct Instituto national of industry (INI) founded the company national of trucks S.A. (ENASA). This new company is ranked in the expropriated installations of the Suiza (brand that disappeared after the end of the Guerra Civil). I say expropriated because the dictatorship that emerged after the war took from Hispano-Suiza possibilities have a future in the auto industry.
On the ruins and projects of the Suiza, ENASA created its first truck using the last design of its predecessor and it launched to the market as own called it Pegasus I. With this first truck did Pegasus and history that today we bring you here. Thanks to the Pegaso I Spanish industrialization was much more bearable and served as a spear so that the mark should become better known as Pegasus that by his own name.
The first Pegasus genuine was the Z-207 Barajas of 1955. This truck was the first that came out of the new facilities that the brand had built in Madrid and had with innovations so important for it time as engine V6 of aluminum and a suspension front independent. However, Pegasus not is was still and also is got of full in the business of them buses designing the first bus urban with motor cross under the soil.
However, the facet less known of Pegaso was its incursion in the world of the cars of street. The brand launch in the year 1951 the Pegaso Z-102. This sport was designed by Wifredo Ricart and riding a modern V8 engine (2,500 cc, 2800 cc or 3200 cc) with four trees of camshaft, independent suspension on all four wheels and gearbox at the rear axle. This car became a genuine world reference, however in 1958 after making only 84 units the Franco regime decided to end the project by high losses, destroying all the data that existed on it.
After this brief incursion in the cars of street, Pegaso decided to devote is of full to what best is you gave; the manufacture of trucks and buses. However, the company would be acquired in the year 1991 by the Italian IVECO putting an end to 45 years of ENASA and public of the company control. From that year until 2008 the company resulting from the acquisition would be IVECO-Pegaso and after this date only would be IVECO leaving Pegasus in the Olympus of the gods.
However, IVECO does not renounce to their origienes in Spain and taking advantage of the 70th anniversary of the creation of Pegasus have commemorated this event with an event where he presented a limited edition of 140 units of the new Stralis XP. To do this they have created two different versions with powers of 510 and 570 HP, in white and blue and with decorative elements that are reminiscent of Pegasus and its history. So these XP Stralis are decorated on the inside and outside with patterns that resemble the symbol of the Spanish truck Pegaso.
To end the review of the history of Pegasus must remember that IVECO after acquiring ENASA has bet heavily on Spain to manufacture their models. In Madrid has one of the most important factories in the world of Industrial CNH Group (branch dedicated to the manufacture of commercial vehicles of the FCA group) and the only one capable of Europe to manufacture this type of heavy vehicles.
For all this, and despite the origins of convulsive ENASA and Pegasus, we want to congratulate the signing of the winged horse for 70 years in such good shape and follow motorizing half a world.
